Brand name camcorder battery or no?
Posted by Ken on June 28th, 2005

Hi. I'm looking for a long life battery for my Panasonic PV-GS250.
Panasonic makes the CGA-DU21 for $83. Some companies called Vidpro and
CTA make comparable versions for about $68. Are these battery
manufacturers okay? Or should I just spring the extra 15 bucks for the
Panasonic?

Thanks!

Ken

I know nothing about batteries, but almost always go for no-name
aftermarket batteries when the originals start getting tired. I
wouldn't spend the money for Vidpro or CTA; whoever they are, they
sound expensive. Aftermarket batteries that seem to be 100% as good as
Sony or Canon originals (my experience) should cost no more than half,
perhaps more like 1/3 the name-brand cost. I've been happy with
www.eagleimports.com and others.

Check out eBay. I just did a search for "CGA-DU21" and found a bunch of
sellers.

I live in Australia and my local Sony store charges full retail on most
of their items, it's digusting. So I purchase my lenses, batteries,
microphones from eBay dealers. I saved 80% (that was after including
postage from Hong Kong) on a sealed Sony battery for my HC-30 video
camera when I purchased it from a seller on eBay. Check their feedback
and find a reputable seller and you'll save big $$.

If you waqn to buy no-names, I'd suggest buying *one* first and seeing how
long it lasts between charges (and if it likes to be recharged). I heard
complaints from some folks aboutbatteries being crappy. (I've had no
trouble, personally, though)

GenJerDan...is that you from the DVX forums? SafetyO here. I own two
"non-brand" batteries for my DVX and they both work fine.

Yes, but we buy Jarred's batteries, so they *have* to work...we know where

I don't know your camera, but a couple of thoughts:

I have a Sony VX2000 for which I paid $2200. I only use Sony batteries for
it, though I did buy some used on eBay. I won't use 3rd party batteries
because saving $20 or $30 doesn't justify risking an investment of a couple
of thousand. Bear in mind, too, that using third party batteries may void
your warranty.

How true! I just ordered a "two pack" of the 5600's. Never hurts to have
(too many) plenty of available battery power around on a shoot.

Hi,
I got a DU21 made by PowerMart, it works like the thing should, i.e.
charging and discharge time proportional to the DU14 that came with my GS400

Be aware that the DU21 is quite thick, it works ok with the GS400 but the
smaller models can have trouble with the viewfinder being too short.

Regards,

Martin
