Can Anyone Recommend a Video Editing Program W/Effects To Create NEWS Program?
Posted by Incisive32 on July 23rd, 2006

Hi,

We are starting an online medical news program that we would likt to
resemble CNN--e.g., with the ability to superimpose continuous titles
and logos, to create frames with backgrounds, etc.--and need a video
editing program that has the type of effects that one can use to create
a typical news video layout, e.g.

-ability to have multiple "frames" in which different people can be
talking on one screen

-ability to create backgrounds with text into which multiple video
frames can be laid (similar to CNN, MSNBC)

-ability to have continuous titling along the bottom or in background
(e.g. CNN logo, title of segment)

Can anyone suggest a relatively inexpensive software program that has
the ability to create such effects?

Many thanks.

TV programming of the type you describe does not originate from video
editing programs. It arises from compositing hardware which takes live video
feeds and merges them into the resulting broadcast program. The simple
answer to your question is that there is no inexpensive software program
which does what the networks do.

For webcasting, one can construct web pages using an arsenal of web creation
tools which know how to stream video, apply banners and scrolling text, etc.
Assuming that the online medical news has been captured into video files,
these could be served from one or more video servers which your web hosting
could provide. Alternately, live feeds from video sources can be converted
into video streams and then served with your web pages. In either case, you
are in need of web creation tools as opposed to video editing tools.

Will your program be live or will it be prepared ahead of time in its
entirety?

Prepared ahead of time entirely.

Therefore, there will be no need to incorporate live feeds.

It will be based entirely on prerecorded video.

How much of that do you want going on at the same time?

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that you can do that with some 'consumer'
type programs. For instance I use Sony's Vegas Movie Studio Platinum .. and
that will do what you want. If you want all that going on at the same time
you may need to make multiple passes before you get to the finished product.

For instance it will superimpose reduced size video frames over the main
image, but I think the limit is two or three. But you'll need audio for
those extra frames and those are seperate tracks as well.

My point is that you may have to add the constant titles at the bottom and
maybe one 'talking head' .. then render the video .. close the project ..
then import the rendered video and add more talking heads and titles to the
already once rendered video. And so on until you are finished. It's a pain,
but if you have the time it can be done.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (don't get the non-Platinum version) can be
had for around $100 on Amazon.

under $500. So will Adobe Premier Pro at $850. If you are Mac based, then
Final Cut Studio 5.1 runs $1,299. Avid Express DV runs $395. Avid Express
Pro is offered at $2,194. Ulead has software with similar capabilities but
I am totally unfamiliar with their products. Vegas, Premier, and FCP have
lesser priced versions that have some reduced capabilities; however, they
may work fine for what you want to do. All programs that do not use
propriatary hardware will have to render the layers you described in you
initial post. The time those renders take depend on the horsepower of your
computer. If I were you, I'd want to talk with someone doing programs with
the kind of look you are seeking. Idealy find several such people who use
different software. See what they like and what they don't as it applies to
this kind of project. Maybe there are folks here who can help with this.
Whatever you decide, there will be a learning curve. Most of the software
above has manuals that are available on the Internet. Most have demo
versions that can be downloaded; however, those demo downloads may be
de-featured.

And if Sony Vegas (currently version 6.0) does sound interesting, B&H has it
on sale right now for only $149.00.
Be advised that this is the Software Installation CD-ROM only. It does not
include box or manuals. This isn't an issue though as the manual is
available for free online.

The low price probably has something to do with the launch of Vegas 7 in
September.
