Can I burn out a camera from a laptop running live video?
I am curious if there is a possibility of burning out circuits in a
camera if I am running THREE live to a laptop -
2 - on a PCIMIA card
1 - into the laptop firewire port
All running at the same time.
In the past I had to repair 2 camera because of a problem, but I
thought it was a faulty firewire cable with bent pins, but now that
they are prepared, I want to be sure I don't come across the problem
again.
Any thoughts?

Some people (many) have had problems plugging in Firewire connectors when
the power is on. That may apply to both the camera and the computer. I'd
like to know what your capture software is. Let us know how this project,
with the three simultaneous captures, works.

In the past I used a demo version of Wirecast and it works.

Assuming you are NOT powering the cameras via the Firewire?
Note that many users have experienced problems (as bad as
frying the Firewire port in the camcorder) by "hot-plugging" the
Firewire in at EITHER end. Sony (and/or Apple?) now advises
NOT to do any "hot-plugging" of Firewire cables into powered
equipment. (Even this is contrary to the theoretical capabilities
of Firewire). The problem has nothing to do with live video,
but appears related to the fragile nature of the Firewire port
electronics in many camcorders. (Too sensitive to static
discharge, or something??)
Many people would like to know what software you are using
to capture multiple DV streams on a laptop. Or are you doing
something else? Live-switching or something?

I did post it before your reply, it is Wirecast by Varasoft.
So are you saying that as long as the cameras are turned on after they
are plugged in that it is ok?

I am only reporting what others are saying. I confess to
"hot plugging" Firewire without ever experiencing any
failure. OTOH, I will be more careful in the future.
