- can I play DVD's on my PC which are recorded on standalone DVD/Hard Disc recorder?

Hi
Sorry not sure if this is the right NG for this question...
I'm thinking of buying a stand alone DVD/HDD recorder for TV
broadcasts. The idea I have in mind is to then edit the discs on my
PC.
I assumed that the video format would be a standard MPEG file which
would playback on my PC.
Before I part with lots of cash I thought it best I should check this
will work rather than assume!
Thanks for any info.
Ian
