Canon avi files easy to convert to mpeg4 ?
Posted by surfivor on February 16th, 2007

I have researched cameras a bit more. The canon cameras seem to have
better quality, but they produce very large .avi files. Is it easy to
convert these to mpeg4 ? What software would I use ? I also seem to
find mention that sony cameras have very expensive propriatary
batteries and memory. I wonder if this could mean 10-15 years down the
road I might have a hard time finding batteries ? Canons just use
regular AA batteries and off the shelf memory cards ?

Yes, it's not too hard. You can do it for free by using VirtualDub and
installing the Xvid codec (which is mpeg4). I use this all the time.

Honestly, you're not going to be using the same digital camera after
10-15 years.

Canons mostly use SD memory card, which are probably the most popular
and cheapest. The compact Canons may have proprietary batteries
though, you pretty much have to have proprietary for compact cameras
to achieve thinness.

Anyone have a link where I can go download the best
free Xvid codec (*.vdf) to place in the VirtualDub
"plugins" folder? Seems like there is a specific
file(s) with the extension of VDF that I need.

I am making the assumption that a free Xvid codec
produces better quality than the existing free Divx
codecs. Is this correct, and is there one specific
*.vdf that will produce the best MPEG4 product?

Thanks,
Gene

It's not a .vdf file. You just have to install the Xvid codec on your
operating system, and VirtualDub will recognize it. Download at

Thanks, Bucky.

I thought that you installed the Xvicd codec on your
system as you said. What caused me to post was
this readme.txt file that was in the plugins empty
folder.

LOL - I need to quit thinking of codecs as filters :-)

Filter plugins (*.vdf) placed here are automatically loaded
by VirtualDub on startup.
