- color matching two cameras?
- Posted by peter on February 8th, 2007
Is there a systemetic way to color match video from one camera with video
from another camera using premiere pro 1.5? The two cameras differs in not
just brightness, but color saturation, and perhaps gamma as well. One is a 1
CCD and the other is 3CCD.
Premiere has plenty of color related effects: levels, tint, color match
(does not work well), procamp, brightness, channel mixer, ...
Which of the various scopes should I be using to compare the two clips? If I
just eyeball the clips, I may notice one clip is bluer than the other. But
should I use tint, level, channel mixer, or procamp to fix this? Most of the
time I can only use trial and error. There ought to be a better way.

Does Premiere have a color corrector? The best way is to have some
detailed control over the high, mid and low color channels and to tweak
them.

You're not going to get a good color match. I do this in Premiere from time
to time. There is a filter, the exact name of which I don't recall, that
will match color. However, that's only the first step. Then I use the
color correction filter to tweak gamma, black level, white level, and
master, shadow, highlight and midrange color casts. I usually need to do
this to add b-roll that was shot at a different time of day so, frequently,
it's just a color temperature issue. I've also done this for specific
projects when I was cutting together a number of amateur-shot videos. The
best I can get in the latter case is something that isn't too jarring to the
viewer, but the use of different cameras is obvious.
