Composite Switch with TWO Outputs?
Posted by Edward on February 8th, 2007

I have a TV with composite and S video jacks on the back. I use a
standard Radio Shack el cheapo switch to go between the DVD player and
Cable box.
I wish new TVs had the ability to have three sets of jacks on the back
and automaticallt switch between them - just be seeing if there's a
signal. But apparently they don't....

So what I'm looking for is a Switch that has two outputs, have two
switchable inputs, and have the signal go to two devices, a TV and PC.

Most such cheap manual switch boxes have 1-input and
4-output or 4-input and 1-output, it's up to you how you
use them.

What I do is use one as an "Input" switch with 4 inputs,
and one as an "Output" switch with 4 outputs.

The S-Video output of the "Input" switch goes to the
S-Video input of the "Output" switch.

The right & left audio output of the "Input" switch goes
to my sound system receiver.

The first of the 4 inputs brings in the S-Video from my
DirecTiVo box, the second brings in S-Video from a
DVD Recorder (and a VHS player that is on one of
the DVD recorder's inputs or a LaserDisk Player that
is on another of the DVD Recorder's inputs.) The
third and forth inputs aren't used at this time.

For the "Output" switch, S-Video outputs 1 of the 4
goes to a TV, 2/4 goes to a projector, 3/4 goes to a
PC in another room, and 4/4 is unused.

-----------------

So, you could just run cable(s) for the S-Video,
composite, and the two audio connections; between
the one connection set that is marked differently than
the other four on each switch.

Then plug in whatever inputs and outputs you want.

Use the "Input" box to select the source, and the "Output"
box to select where that signal goes. Label the boxes and
the buttons.

Luck;
Ken

Most of the kinds of switches that are *active* (require power
and have amplifiers inside) give you two (or more) outputs.

OTOH, no passive video switch can give you more than one
output because you can't "split" video.

Ok, what about a powered one?

Yes, powered switchers frequently provide 2 or more
outputs as I already said (above).

IMHO, that should read "no passive video switch can give you more than
one output *at a time*".

The thing about a switch is that it is a ... switch :-)

I have used switches back to back as described in the last couple of
days in another thread which I can't find right now. Say three inputs
to switch one, then connect its output to the output of switch two,
then use switch two's selector to choose the device that will get the
signal from the selected input. Much better than a y-splitter :-)

That works with passive switches because the switch doesn't care which
way the signal is going. Amplified switches do care, but the amplifiers
isolate the outputs. BTW, one amplified switch might happen to be
cheaper than two passive switches :-)

Visit mcminone.com; search for part number 50-7780. This is a six
input (each one SVideo + composite + 2-CH Audio), two output passive
switch. Works fine.

And Radio Shack sells at least one, I have it.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=family

They seem to be dropping it, and it looks like some have
not worked for some users. Mine has worked well.
Still for <$30 (it originally sold for over $70), it might
be worth a try.

They have others listed at www.radioshack.com

Then there's :

Look for other Home Automation/ Home Theater sites.
