Constant Need To Render in FCP
Posted by jviking@comcast.net on August 24th, 2006

I'm editing in Final Cut Pro and I find I keep having to render each
little snippet I edit or add to the main timeline. The books I've
read, such as lynda.com's "Final Cut Pro 5", etc. seem to imply that I
shouldn't need to render as often.

I'm running FCP 5.0.4 on a Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz, (up until recently one
of the fastest machines on the planet, I believe), with what's probably
a modest 2GB ram.

In the playback control options, I have the RT setting set to "Safe".

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

JV

Might it have to do with what kind of video file(s) you are editing?
You didn't mention what kind. Maybe some Mac-head could help
determine if you might be using a non-native codec or something?

Check your setup preferences. If your files are not
the same format you will have that problem.

Second, I had the same effect with a Quicktime
file even though it was in DV format.

Hope that helps.

As with any software-only NLE-program, if your input-format is different
from the output-format, real-time becomes a problem. Another thing is if
you use "heavier" video-filters (like a blur and colour-correction), you
will need to render.

The footage I captured was shot on DVCPro50 NTSC, and I believe I've
set all the corresponding settings in FCP to DVCPro50, (though the
closest option in some instances was DV50, which I'm assuming is
correct?).

Not sure what else I would check to see if my input-format matches my
output-format. Suggestions?

It's been a while that I've used FCP, and actually never DVCPro50, so I
don't know if there is a difference there. It shouldn't, but you never
know. The field-order, de/interlacing, framerate, and resizing, all come
into play as well.

cheers
