Dual G5 2ghz + FCP?
Posted by Chris Mauritz on October 21st, 2003

Not being much of a Mac person, I figured I'd inquire here...

A friend of mine is able to get me these at a substantial discount. I
was wondering if anyone here is using these with the 23" cinema display
for editing with FCP. If so, how well does it work?

I'd be ordering them with a gig of RAM, 1/2 terabyte of storage, the ATI
Radeon 9800 Pro video option and dual 23" cinema displays. Any guidance
would be greatly appreciated. I'd mostly be cutting up content that's
already in DV format. Also, is anyone using one of these rigs as a home
theatre/HDTV system?

Cheers,

C

FCP & G5 combo not yet ready for prime time. Go to lafcpug.org to see a long
long list of frustrated Final Clutz users.

The machine is damn near useless as a home theathre system.
It has only one bay for a optical drive, thus making it impossible to
play and burn a disk at the same time. This will add unwanted
wear and tear if you buy an expensive dvd burner as your only optical drive.

Ever hear of external drives? Besides, not everyone needs to burn
dozens of copies of a DVD for all their friends who can't afford them.
Whatever happened to dumping material to the hard drive first if you
need a copy of it???

Me thinks this system is a bit overkill for the simple work you do!
Maybe you should spent more money on oodles of storage?

I recently bought a 12" Powerbook. I know I don't need it but I am cuious
about OSX. My thinking is after I am through with it, I can give it to my
neice for college dorm. After using it for weeks, I see no reason for me to
get a G5 desktop. My current Althon and WinXP is stable while the PB crashed
a couple of times. At one time, I even got a screaming error message while
eveything stopped in FOUR languages to tell me to reboot. However, after the
last OS update a day or two ago, the system seems to be stable again but
some programs still quit unexpectedly occassionally. I also played with FCP
4 and DVD Studio Pro 2 a bit. As far as the stuffs I am doing, I am happy
with Premiere, Encore, Vegas and DVD Architect on my desktop pc.

So, get the G5 and Cinema if you have money to burn and are obsessed with
Mac OSX. As far as using the Mac for theatre, it is not in the prime time
yet. If your current system works well, I personally would spend money on a
nice camcorder instead!!

Actually, I'm not obsessed with anything. I haven't owned a Mac in
about 10-12 years. However, I have the opportunity to buy the top of
the line G5 + cinema display for about what it would cost to buy a
moderately well configured P4 system (which I already have...for gaming
). My primary motivation is to use the new Mac to learn FCP 4. I've
not yet even seen OSX, though I am an experienced Unix user.

Both dual G5 + 23" Cinema is similar price to a P4? That must be a hefty
discount!!! I am sure want to buy one and put it on ebay. ;-)

Have you considered the new 12" G4 iBook? Good enough for mastering FCP4. As
for home theatre. I haven't found an AC3 decoder for the DivX. Not much use
for now and as a portable without PCI tuner, it's impossible to recoder any
analog video.

What people continually fail to comprehend is that a G5 is like a
