DVD writer, which to buy?
Posted by Christopher Pollard on February 12th, 2005

I'm about to buy a DVD writer, but I'm confused which type to buy.

I have seen two in the right price range at a local (Philippines) online dealer:

Sony DRU-710A 16X 8.5GB Double Layer and Pioneer DVR-A07 8X DVD±RW

So it seems the Sony can do double layer, whereas the Pioneer can't. Also it's
16x for single layer against the Pioneer's 8x.

This ought to be enough to swing my decision, but is there anything about the
Pioneer which is better than the Sony? It's actually a little more expensive.

Is there a decent website explaining (in simple terms) the difference between +r
and -r?

Failing that, if I decide to but from a local store instead of mail order, what
features should I look for? Presumably ±r and dual layer are useful things to
have.
