Google Earth

Is there a way in which you can record the animation of a search in google
earth and save as a file, or do you need special screen grabbing software?
If so what software is suitable. I assume there is a copyright issue also?
Thanks for any advice.

Might be easiest to aim a camera at a LCD screen.
ZDnet/Tech TV did that quite commonly and they had a
budget that could afford virtually any hardware or software.

Google might well give you permission (depending on what you
are going to do with it).

I found that, on my computer (a 3.0 GHz P4), screen capture software
couldn't keep up with the Google stream and the result was too choppy. What
I wound up doing was using my dual-head video card to output the cropped
Google Earth window to the A/V video input of a miniDV camcorder, record it
and then capture the resulting video. I've gotten pretty good results that
way.

Did you try Demostudio? That's what I used:

Camtasia and other similar screen capturing software won't do it. Something
about recording the screens of media players (like Windows Media Player,
Quick Time and others). Same thing happens with Google Earth. You capture
the frame okay, but inside the frame, you get nothing but a black screen
where the "earth" should be.

Google Earth does sell software that enables you to output a Google Earth
search (flyover, zoom-in, or whatever) to Windows Media (.wmv). But it's
pricey (though I suppose that is relative). First, you have to subscribe
(annual subscription) to the Google Earth PRO ($400). Then there's a
plug-in add-on for $200 that enables you to do the screen capture thing,
exporting as .wmv. Go to http://earth.google.com and click on the Google
Earth Pro for details.

And yes, in answer to others, there is a copyright thing in play here. Only
by subscribing to the "pro" service to you have access to this stuff for
distribution.

Many moons ago the fix for the "black screen" capture problem was to
disable video acceleration in the playback application ... don't know
if it would work in this case, but worth a try.
