- Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 + WinTV2000
- Posted by nick on September 22nd, 2007
Hi just got my Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 which is working great except
that it seems to take 5~10 seconds every time to start recording. Is
this the hardware/usb interface limitation or it's just WinTV2000
actiing silly?
I also can't seem to get WinTV2000 to stay in "fullscreen" mode on an
extended desktop (2nd monitor) while I do other stuff on the primary
monitor. Anyone know if this is possible at all with or could
recommend an alternative?
Cheers for any help.

It's a combination of both, but mostly the latter. You can run
alternate recording software (I think DScaler supports USB
cards now) that is a lot more responsive. WinTV2000 is a
royal piece of shit.
No idea on that one, sorry.

I ditched WinTV2000 3 days after getting my Hauppauge pvr250 several years ago
and tried out both BeyondTV and SageTV for their trial periods, one after the
other. I settled on SageTV because it's more fool-aroundable and very
flexible. It also adapts quickly to new hardware and new situations, and the
user community forums truly rock.
Haven't looked back since.
But there are public domain solutions out there as well.
Hell, anything's better than what came with your product. You might consider
tossing WTV2000. Nex

I've only recently put away my Hauppauge analog capture devices,
having switched to digital capture devices. I've never had a
problem with the Hauppauge devices nor WinTV2K. The
hardware/software employ some buffering that creates a lag
between the time the picture is received vs. the time it is
displayed. Never-the-less, the start up time is excessive.
Since I used my own scheduling program, I built in a 2 minute
start-early, end-late scheme that took care of that problem as
well as those times that broadcasters and PCs are not synched to
the same clock. In case you're interested, the WinTV2K program
accepts command-line arguments for most of its functionality, so
it's quite simple to "tweak."
The OnAir devices I'm now using do not offer command-line nor
API access, so I'm stuck using their scheduler until they get
around to including one or both. Yet, the OnAir scheduler is
considerably better than Hauppauge's approach and the units fire
up quickly. I've tried Sage and its ilk as well as Vista. None
of those made me as happy as using my own scheduler with
WinTV2K.
As to full-screen, I never used the Hauppauge device to actually
watch video, so I've no idea. But, if it's merely "full screen"
which is giving you a problem, perhaps you can just resize the
alternate (control-less) window to whatever size you'd like. At
worst you'll have a 2 pixel border along one edge or two.
In case you've not yet found the alternate window, it's opened
with a right click in the video frame.
