Help with moving Ulead captures to Virtualdub
Posted by Betty on July 19th, 2003

I finally got a firewire card so I could capture digital tapes. It
had Ulead Video Studio with it.

With it I have captured some videos but want to edit them in
Virtualdub. VDub doesn't recognize the AVI files made in Ulead.

How do I convert? Or how do I capture in the first place so they will
be compatible???

And if not Ulead, is there a freebie out there for capturing digital
camcorder tapes that I can edit in VDub????

Thanks.,

B..............

VirtualDub can only open DV AVI files if you install a VfW DV codec.
The only free one I know of is the Matrox DV codec:
http://www.rt2500.tv/download/goodies.html
http://www.rt2500.tv/files/VFWSoftwareCodec.zip
This .zip archive contains the following codecs:
- Matrox DV/DVCAM
- Matrox DVCPRO
- Matrox DVCPRO50
- Matrox M-JPEG
- Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame

There are other VfW DV codecs (from MainConcept for example) but they
are only free for decompressing. If you use them for compression they
add a watermark, unless you buy them of course.

Betty,

The free Canopus utility DV Converter

http://www.canopus.com/US/products/D..._converter.asp

can convert type I DV-AVI files to type II. My version of Virtual Dub will
only handle the video part of the newer type I files. There are some other
apps that can't handle the newer type yet also.

See the bottom of the Saving Movies... General page at www.papajohn.org
