How do I get from VHS to streaming video on Web site?
Posted by Elliott Graham on January 26th, 2004

Hi,
I have been asked to put a streaming video clip on my company's web
site. There are none there currently. I have been given a VHS video
casette with the content. I haven't got a clue how to get the content
from the v.c. to the Web site. We have an outside consultant who is
our webmaster. Do I just give him the casette or do I have it coverted
into a digital diskette first? And once the clip is up on our website,
how do I transfer this video clip to someone else's website?
Thanks for any advice. I'm without a clue on this!

Elliott

Generally, it involves capturing the VHS video digitally, via a
capture card or something similar, and then encoding that video
as something like a Windows Media Video (WMV) or a Real Video
Stream.

If you don't have the equipment to do the transfer, I would go
ahead and get a consultant to do that for you, provided you don't
mind the expense.

As far as allowing people to view/save the video from your web
site to their computer, it can be as simple as right-clicking on
the video link and choosing to SAVE AS on the client system. So,
you just right-click on the video, tell it to save it to a local
system, point to a drive and path and then when finished, they
should have a copy of that video on their hard drive. From
there, they can load it to a web site if desired.

If you want to protect your video, you may want to put a
watermark on it.

Hope that helps!

This is more complicated than I expected. Thanks for the explanation,
Paul. Appreciate your help.
