How do I output analog video to my VCR?
Posted by acton on August 22nd, 2003

What's the best way to "save" my edited movies (Windows Movie Maker 2) to
VCR tapes? I'm using WinXP Home.

I've read that Pinnacle's DC10+ has an analog output but I've also read
too many worrisome things about Pinnacle to go with that solution.

I have an nVidia GeForce4 MX440 graphics card with both RCA-composite
video and S-Video out connectors. I've downloaded the latest drivers and
can enable the TV-out ports (I've only tried the composite video port so
far, but that's ok because it's the one I need for my VCR anyway).

Will this setup give me a clean NTSC signal to record from? If so, great
.... but how do I "play" my movie so that the only thing I record is just
the movie (and not other aspects of my Windows desktop ... like Media
Player's outline, etc)?

If anyone has successfully transferred their digital video movies on
their pc to a good quality VHS tape on their VCR .... please let me know
how you did it!

Thanks in advance.

I depends on how you define "clean". It will give you a picture without any
desktop trappings, but it will be underscanned and will not faithfully
reproduce the interlaced nature of the original video. That's why a card
like the DC10+ is needed. My advice would be to record it from your VGA
card and see if it is suitable. A lot of people have been pushing the
Canopus analog to DV convertor. I believe it will go both ways. That would
probably be the best solution barring the cost issue.

Pinnacle has (some) good products--once you leave the low end consumer gear.

I have yet to own an nVidia graphics card with video outputs, but recent
ATI and Matrox cards have a "multihead" mode where the video overlay is
output straight to video as well as in a window on the main graphics card.

I can't figure out how to get good interlaced video output from ATI (I
have had 3 ATI cards with video output)--the video output is really designed
for displaying a computer desktop on a TV, not for displaying video.
Basically all video gets deinterlaced before going out.

The Matrox Millenium G550 (and probably other models) work well, once
I figured out the right options.

Thats not correct, there is a flicker removal setting that you probably have
set at maximum on the card.
