How to get DVD footage into FCP 3?
Posted by A. Film Guy on July 20th, 2003

Problem:

Trying to cut a demo reel.

I have 2 films I shot which producers will only provide as one-off DVD
loaners*.

My editor with MAC and FCP3 has been successful at copying the DVD's
onto my personal (demo reel only) hard drive, however, we cannot
figure out how to get the footage into the FCP timeline as a QT
file...

What are we overlooking?

After talking to half a dozen editors, everyone says the only thing we
can do is dub the DVD by componenet to DVCAM, then digitize the DVCAM
tape into FCP3.

Im not an editor and very computer un-saavy. However, this solution
seems ludicrous- not only stupid, like we are missing a clue, but
image-degrading (DVD isn't exactly a good format to source anyway-
these shows were shot 35mm and finished on Digibeta, but all I can get
is a DVD which even on the best monitor looks nothing like the stuff
looked in the telecine suite).

Any suggestions ?

* They are not commercially duped DVD's; apparently these cannot be
copied... although if you know how please tell, as one other thing I
shot the producer has never provided copy but I bought a DVD of it at
the video store.. and assume I cant do anything with the footage for
my reel since it's copy-guarded.

Wow, that's the most original excuse for piracy I've heard to date.

I am not a pirate. I have a contractual right to use any footage I
shoot, ever, as demo material. Apparently you don't understand that
because you edit weddings or porn ( or the new, lucrative hybrid,
wedding-porn).

Cinematographers are often contractually promised use of their work
for a producer in the form of a demo reel. I have it in my contract.

Getting the tape is almost unenforcable, however. Once you've shot the
movie they don't give a shit about you.

Lately people are giving out mini DV or DVDs, the former very
unuseable because of dropouts, the latter because of said issue.
