How to make good mpeg from picture files?
Posted by Jay on July 23rd, 2003

Hi, I have lot of photos that I am thinking to make it into VCD. I
have scanned the photos using quite high resolution (some 300dpi, some
600dpi) and stored as JPG format. I once tried creating mpeg file from
some of the scanned images using Vegas Video and Media Studio but the
resulting video quality are not too good, the image is just not clear
and not smooth enough. I am wondering how you guys make good quality
video from photos? What file format (photo) that generates better
quality video? What image resolution is better?

Thanks for any help.

J.

Not sure about the Mpeg-1 part for VCD, but I have
played with both Media Studio Pro (6.5) and Sonic's
Video Factory 2.0 (the little brother of Vegas). Both
did a good job for Mpeg-2 (DVD) for me. There are
a couple of tricks to use for MSP:

- you either have to have the picture in the right aspect
ratio to start with or it looks tall/short OR, the easy way
is to use a simple 2D motion path, make it a custom with
the start and end size the same. Just drop that on your
picture with the "maintain aspect ratio" checked and it
works fine.

- make sure your picture clip (on the time line) is set to
"frame based" (right click and select Field order?)

Give that a try and see if that helps. Make sure you view
it on the expected target to judge the results -- what you
see on the computer is not what you see on the TV usually.
The output should be interlaced for the TV.

Check out http://www.vcdhelp.com for lots of good information.
