Ideal Video Workstation, on a budget?
Posted by Doc on October 9th, 2004

Want to open a thread about which CPU/mainboard to use for a workstation
that will 'encode and work with video' -

I'm looking at the AMD Athlon 64 FX53 or a DUAL XEON board with Intel chips.
Not sure if I want to go with a 'real' 320 SCSI or try SATA RAID0 on,
say, an AMD 939 chiped board.... the MSI boards are testing nicely.

I've never set up a DUAL XEON board...
Any one comment on the overall memory bandwidth on either "type" board?
Many thanks.

I have a dual XEON 2.2 running XP Pro SP2 with Premiere Pro / Combustion /
3DSMax6 / AE etc etc.. no real problems other than those usually assicated
with these apps..

Have you ever been able to compare the rendering times with, say, the
Athlon FX-53?
I hear such good stuff about that but also hear that certain video
coding is programmed specifically for some of the INTEL architect???
Any one know about that...

nope. sitting through renders for the sake of comparing them sounds like
Chinese water torture.

Probably not true.
