- iMac with EyeTV 250, TV Mini HD caps and aspect probs
- Posted by lampbay on March 9th, 2007
EyeTv 250 and TV Mini Hd do a fine job of capturing and recording from
analog and digital sources. But when encoding using Toast 8, the
closed captions do not transfer to DVD. I've heard that the only way
to get cc to record properly is using standalone DVD recorders. Also,
aspect ratio is fine on the iMac screen and the captions are there but
when encoding, for example, a Globe Trekker program that is HD 4.3 is
comes off on DVD playback as a small box in the center of the 4x3
screen instead of filling the box. Any way to correct these problems?

No.. they're not necessary! APples and the software that apple sells is
soooo good... soo trouble free that support newsgroups are a thing of the
past!

If so, why this thread?

Then you have a solution for these Mac video processing problems?
You can capture HD in any aspect ratio and create a proper DVD
with a PC. This thread calls into question the Mac's ability to do so.
How does that equate to "demonstrable proof that Mac does much
better video"?

Much better video than what?
And how would you know if you can not get yours to work?
What is better video anyway? Suppose you explain that first.
I am sure everyone here would be enlightened.

Ken, I hereby resolve to never post a sarcastic comment to any

In this case, I figured that the "YMMV" would indicate that I was
kidding. Apparently it didn't suffice.
In point of fact, the OP should check out the Mac forums for help.

Not being a Mac user, that's about the best suggestion that I can
make. If no one there is willing and/or able to help, well, that's
life.
I should have thought that words such as "No answers there either - no
one wants to help, just complain. BTW, I've used PC and Mac and Mac

see something fundamentally contradictory, even borderline absurd, in
that, don't you? I did, which is why I added more absurdity, since the
thread wasn't going anywhere anyway.

That's bullxxxx, Ken. I've used multiple PCs, desktop and laptop, with
Dazzle low-end capture hardware and Pinnacle software, among others,
none of which would capture captions. And the video quality is nothing
to compare with the resolution of low-end Mac capture devices. Also,
Mac software even at the lowest end gives many more options for
encoding and output than any PC software I've seen from amateur to
professional grade. If you want to flame Macs, become one of the PC
trolls at CSMA. Maybe you are already.

I'm obviously not a pro - I checked the usenet mac user video groups
and got no help there - thanks for the Apple link where much more info
is available.

Try capturing live or recorded video with Dazzle to a PC using whatever
software you choose and then try using one of the aforementioned Mac
capture devices and edit and encode it with Toast, QuickTime Pro,
iMovie HD or iDVD and you will see and hear what I mean. Have fun
buying all new hardware and memory just so you can run Vista without
bogging down.

All along I've been capturing direct via firewire (no converter box needed)
to my computer (a PC) running Sony Vegas, trimmming as necessary, adding
titles and other assorted FX and then burning to DVD with Sony's DVD
Architect.
I always thought it looked pretty good but now I guess I should've been
using a Mac instead :-)
Vista isn't wantded or needed as XP PRO SP2 works just fine for me.

You're welcome, and if the Apple discussion forums aren't any help,
then you might want to take a look at the many Creative Cow forums,
although the emphasis tends to be on the Apple Pro Apps.

Good luck!

Dazzle and Pinnacle, do not have the best of reputations, but fortunately,
with a PC, you have many other options. Every encoding codec made is
available for the PC, there are no options available exclusively to a Mac,
even apple codec. A PC is a platform for many Operating Systems not
just those the few allowed by Apple, for the Mac. Is there a Linux Mac?
I am not trying to bash Apple or the Mac, I was just saying that if you
have
Apple specific questions, you should try the Apple News Groups. But I can
and will rebut your claim that the Mac is any better at Video than a PC.
Luck;
Ken

You are absolutely right - I'm a learning amateur. I've already
discovered that if I want to get closed captions to encode to DVD, I'm
going to need something more than consumer grade software on either PC
or Mac platforms. The pro software can do it easily from what I've
ready. I put Dazzle back in the box and switched to Mac because at the
very least the available consumer grade Mac hardware does capture video
well along with CC - Dazzle doesn't. I've located some good sources
for my education thanks to the helpful posts here - much obliged to you
all.
