- Jittery Video in DVD Playback
- Posted by jmasone@yahoo.com on August 1st, 2004
I burned my first DVD using NeoDVDStandard4. Had Video Quality set to
"Best". Burned onto a TDK 4x DVD-R disc. When I play the DVD disc
back on my PC, the quality looks great. When I play back on a
set-top DVD player (tried several), the motion appears to jitter,
especially when the camera is panning or moving quickly. Any idea
what might be causing this and how to avoid it?

Sounds like a field order problem. Not having worked with NeoDVD, I
can't suggest how to fix it. But if anywhere along the lines of
working with the video you see something about field order, try
switching it to the opposite of what it currently is.

You might be rendering the video in a low bit rate.
Try increasing the video bit rate to 4000 kbps or greater.

Thanks, but NeoDVD has no options for field order, and nothing
mentioned in their help files. Something else I just noticed is that
the DVD I created has two menus, each with six chapters. The video
for each chapter in the first menu exhibit the jitter problem. The
video for each chapter in the second menu plays perfectly. I thought
maybe I had set the quality for the first menu lower, but on double
checking, all menus are set to "Best Quality". Very strange.

Then, you may need to change that order yourself. For instance, with
Avisynth's ComplementParity. Perhaps preparing a small 30 seconds
sample, then burning that as DVD on a rewritable to see if the problem
dissapears.

What did you capture with? That is where the field setting is set. If
incorrect, you get jitter with motion.

I also used NeoDVDStandard4 for capturing, but there are no field
settings. Also, that would not explain why the first half of the
video is jittery while the second half is fine. The whole video was
captured at once. Something might have happened during the editing
process. Perhaps NeoDVD is re-encoding and screwing up the field
order then.

Either the material to capture, or the capture program, suddenly
changed the field order. I have never faced that kind of problem, but
I have read many times that it can happen.

If your program allows it, check the parameters of the different
segments and see if the is a difference in field order. I know Ulead
will give you the parameters of a file, including field order.

Maybe a silly question but did you use any other programs while copying the
dvd's? If I leave my computer to copy overnight and close everything else
not necessary it works okay but if I try to copy and even play Solitaire it
screws up big time!!! This is because I have not got enough RAM
