- killing birds with stones

I am working on a project that involves converting some 3 1/2 hours of
VHS to an editable format (probably AVI as I'm a Windows user),
editing it and then producting a DVD.
My only editing software is Windows MovieMaker, and the (much
appreciated) consensus on a prior post of mine was to steer clear of
WMM unless I'm working on a very simple and small project.
So, the questions:
1. What hardware do I need to convert VHS to AVI?
2. Is there a software product that will allow me to capture from VHS
*and* edit the AVI?
I'm hoping this can be done in the $100-200 range.

There are capture/coversion cards you can buy. The ones from Hauppage
seems to get good marks. You could covert directy to Mpg2, which is the
DVD standard anyway. Don't have one myself, but I imagine they can
capture to the DV Avi standard as well. Still, no sense in going all
transcode city on things, capture to Mpg2 and edit that then make your
DVD's.
Or
Buy a DVD recorder and record from the tape to DVD then use something
like Womble or Videoredo to edit the dvd files if you wish.
Or
Get an older camcorder off Ebay, record your movies to tape, capture the
tape with windows movie maker and go that route.
