Make MPEG file using pinnacle studio plus 9

I want to make mpeg file using pinnacle studio plus 9, but not sure
what settings to use.
What should I select for Presets? and Compression? and Data rate for
Video and Audio?
What numbers will generate good quality mpeg files?
Or should I use mpeg file as my final output for my videos at all?
Since avi takes up too much space. Is there a better alternative?

Thanks

Alternative for what?? What do you want to do with your mpeg file? Just
look at it on a computer, or ?? There should be pre-sets for mpg for VCD
quality video, and also a pre-set mpg for DVD quality video. VCD is
*aproximatetly* VHS quality (or slightly less) and may be just good enough
(plus much smaller file size than DVD quality)

What I want to find out is if I want to view the video 20, 30 years
from now, is mpg a good format? or should I save the video under some
other formats?

If MPEG is good enough today, it will likely be good
enough 20-30 years from now. VHS has lasted at least
that long, so it is inconcievable that MPEG won't be
playable in 20-30 years.

OTOH, most (all?) video by then will be HD, so SD,
and especially highly compressed SD will seem like
those old scratchy b&w movies look to us today. If
you want something comparable to future quality, use
something with less compression (DV comes to mind.)

Of course, what you have the MPEG stored on must
also last 20-30 years and I am not betting on DVDR
to have that kind of lifetime. I've had too many failures
after months or a couple years to have any faith at all
in the archival potential of CDR or DVDR. Mag tape
appears to be the archival medium of choice by even
those with unlimited budgets, so I think it is good enough
for me.

Hello..

I am from Myanmar.
I am not good in english
But...I want to give you some suggestion...
If you want to get best quality of vcd.
Capture with mpeg 1 (VCD) format through S-video cable.
Don't use Composite Cable.
.....1150 data stream is the best quality of VCD.
use s-vidoe cable to capture the mpeg1(VCD) .

So if I create MPEG using "DVD compatible" preset that means less
compression, is that correct?
If that's ture, then that means, since it's not feasible for me to
store videos in avi formats due to file size issue, so next best thing
will be save video as MPEG2 using "DVD compatible" preset. Am I right?

Thanks for your input.
