making a music video
Posted by pbotkin@earthlink.net on September 22nd, 2007

I have loaded a 7:49 music track into iMovie 6.0.2. I'm trying to
build a Video in sync with this music track. I have placed photo's,
clips, lipsync'd text, transitions and effects in various places in
the timeline viewer. All are in sync with the music track. I can't
seem to lock the timeline materials so they won't move when I add or
remove new material in the unfilled timeline spaces. It is imperative
that the materials in the timeline viewer stay exactly where they are
as they are all in sync with the music. (The music never moves only
the stuff in the timeline viewer.
I'm beginning to think that iMovie 6 won't let me do this. I don't
want to move on to Final Cut Express if I can help it but I really
need to know if my efforts will or will not work in iMovie. Thanks in
advance for any suggestions.

Not being a Final Cut or Mac user, I can only offer a generic
suggestion: Can you put your "fixed" elements in the lower
numbered video tracks and lock them down, then put the rest
of your stuff in the upper video tracks? That is what I do with
Adobe Premiere, etc.

Use the BACKSPACE key instead of the delete key.
Also use the LOCKs on the tracks.

It is imperative

I tried "Lock Audio Clip at Playhead". It doesen't lock Clips or
Photo's or anything else in the VIDEO Timeline viewer (strip). I
don't need it in the 2 AUDIO Timeline strips. Damn. Thanks for the
suggestion anyway.

You can select clips and use the backspace key to delete them without
affecting the timeline.

Or perhaps I do not understand your problem correctly.

I wasn't paying enough attention.

Never used iMovie. FCP is enough of a toy.
