motion detection capture

If I connect my firewire camcorder to my computer, is there a free software
that would capture video only when there is motion detected?

I found many that does this with USB webcam, but I want to use a real
camcorder for better video quality.

Or is there some software that would make a firewire-connected camcorder
appear like a usb webcam to other sofware?

I found several when I Googled for: firewire webcam
(or some similar search words)

This is the first thing that popped up in a search.

Using some search terms from their Sourceforge entry.

If the application is for Windows, probably the best you can
expect is trialware (limited trial before buying).

If you have a spare computer, it could be dedicated to running
the application and necessary environment. Otherwise, the computing
requirement may impact normal desktop usage. (It may depend on
how many pixels are being examined per frame.)

You might want to ask this in alt.comp.freeware.
