EyeTV video files have mpg extension. From what I can find on the web, these
are mpeg-1 format. Played in VLC they are described (in Information window)
as mpgv. They will not play in QuickTime Player.
(These files were not properly exported from EyeTV, so they are native
format. They cannot be imported or opened in EyeTV so as to be exported
properly, so they are orphans, now. The "why" is a bit involved, so let's not
go there.)
Pulling these files into VisualHub, I choose to convert them to mpeg-2 format
(which I presume QT can play). I choose MPEG in the "To" box and check
"MPEG-2".
The resulting file cannot be played by QT. In VLC they are identified as...
mpgv.
As best I can determine, nothing changed, except it is smaller and now in the
destination folder.
Did I skip a step? Did I do something wrong? The VH user guide hasn't given
me an answer.
Is there another solution?
Mac OS X 10.4.10
VisualHub 1.23

I've never used EyeTV or VisualHub and I'm a Windows user not a Mac
user, but in my experience the VideoLAN VLC media player program
identifies both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video streams as "mpgv". It doesn't
differentiate between the two.
I think that if you wish to play back MPEG-2 files within the
QuickTime player program, you'll need to have the optional $19.99
MPEG-2 Playback Component installed, although I believe that having
Final Cut Studio installed might eliminate this requirement.

Have you tried the free Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip? Version 1.9 was
just released today. You should give it a try.

Good luck!
