- Need to convert a 2hr tape to a double layer DVD
- Posted by Fred Kasner on February 22nd, 2007
I have a copy of Studio 9.4 as well as the Dazzle 90 convertor. But I
don't believe the Studio 9.4 will write to a double layer DVD+R. I have
a LG writer that will support DL disks but I don't have any write
software that will do the conversion to DVD files on the double layer.
Is there some way to coax the Studio 9.4 to write to a DL disk or do I
have to buy a newer version of Studio?

I have had pretty good experiences with ImgBurn (I believe the current
version is 2.2.0 but I am running 2.1.0 -- http://www.imgburn.com) but
the web site seems down right now, though.
It's pretty good at burning ISO, BIN and IMG files (at least the ones
that Microsoft post's on their web site -- I don't know the source
programs, though). I have also used Sony's cheap version of Vegas
(Vegas Studio?) to build DVD images with AC3 audio, and then burn the
ISO image to a DVD with ImgBurn. The built in burner in the Sony
software does not work as well as ImgBurn.
I have not built a dual layer movie myself, but a Linux distribution
dual layer DVD booted and installed after being burned with ImgBurn
(my only attempt at a dual layer burn, so far), so I would expect that
functionality to be pretty good. I believe the 2.2.0 has a couple of
bug fixes for dual layer (layer change) handling, so you might want to
make sure you have the latest version.
Good luck,

It looks as if the software included with the LG burner supports double
layer. It is a version of Nero. When I did a practice run with the Nero
burner (no disk actually setup to burn) it showed the file that is 123
minutes long as not being limited to the usual length of a DVD (just
beyond 60 minutes). I interpret this to mean it will continue to burn to
the second layer after it fills the first layer. I guess I'll have to
chance ruining an almost $US3.00 disk to see if it works. I presume I
can edit the AVI file I saved the tape as in the edit (not elaborate
just cutting out some noise) part of Studio and save back to original
file name and then burn from that file via Nero.
Thanks for your advice.

Is there a reason you want to do a DL disk as opposed to a single layer?
Unless there's something special about your footage, you can shrink the size
to fit a regular DVD. VideoStudio can be finicky to work with in shrinking
to fit mode so I usually just use it to make an iso file then use dvdshrink
to get it all on to 1 DVD.

Not to confuse, but I use VideoStudio which is different from Studio but my
comments are still applicable.

I've done the single layer process and the quality of the result is not
good. The tape I tried this with was about 2hours and it played at
fairly high quality on the TV screen. But the DVD with its compression
showed a distinct loss of quality in the video due to the almost two
fold compression. Sound was OK but I'm an aging geezer and my auditory
abilities are somewhat compromised. However my sight is still good
enough to see that the compressed video is not too good. I've found that
when you get a "60% quality" the pix are OK and sound decent. But when
yuo get 50% and below you begin to see some significant loss of visual
quality.
