- Need program for video/audio editing
- Posted by guitarman on October 14th, 2007
Hello out there,
I am a composer and the way I capture my musical ideas is by video
taping myself play guitar. What I need is an editing program that will
show a separate audio track along with the video AND I must be able to
edit the audio track and link it to the video. In other words, when
editing the audio, I want to be able to edit the sychronized video
simultaneously. All editing decisions are audio based which is also
linked to the video. This way, I can watch myself play a musical piece
and have the edited audio linked to the video.
My computer is a pc, Athlon AMD , MSI Kmainboard. It is almost 5 years
old. 2 Gigs processor, 1 Gig Ram, Xp home edition.
I now use Pinnacle Studio MediaSuite version 10.5, Titaniuim but it
DOES NOT link the audio with the video.
My camera uses a miniDV and it works well. It is a panasonic pv gs-300
with a 3ccd chip.
Is there a video editing program that does what I want which runs on a
PC? If so, what program does this? Or, Must I buy a Mac and use
FinalCutPro?
Thanks for your help,
Guitarman

From what I understand from your post, is that you link the audio to a
specific bit of video, right? There are not that many programs which can do
such things. Avid Xpress can for sure, and Premiere Pro most likely as
well. Sony Vegas could do this, but maybe someone else can answer if this
is the case.
These are things where programs like Pinnacle Studio bite the dust ;-)

There are many applications for PC that do the same thing
that FinalCutPro does on a Mac. In fact you have a wide
variety of applications to chose from (unlike Mac users).
There are some where sophisticated audio editing apps are
directly linked to the associated video editing program.
(Like Adobe Audition & Premiere, etc.)
All the video editing applications I have used or seen allow
you to edit based on the audio track and the video "follows".
Perhaps there are some low-end video editing apps that don't
so that, but there is no lack of programs that DO what you
are asking for.

Your needs, as far as the number of tracks) are minimal so I'd suggest
looking at Vegas Movie Studio (the non-HDV version).
A trial version is available at
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/...ct.asp?pid=446 and
will run on your system with no problems.
If oyu don't have one, I'd strongly recommend a 2nd hard drive (firewire
or USB external is OK) for all your video footage.
If you don't need DVD authoring capabilities, B&H had Vegas 6 (the full
version, not Movie Studio) on sale for $99. I can't get to their site
right now to confirm if this deal is still available.

Vegas has an audio background and might be a good choice
especially if you can get that $99 deal Mike mentioned. Another
even less expensive choice, with an audio orientation would be
Magix's Movie Edit Pro series.

They even have a program called "Guitar Workshop" that
may have been created by doing something like what you
describe. Perhaps it could give you some ideas.
Luck;

Adobe Premiere Pro + Auditon (for audio tweaking) will do this nicely.
However, Audition is not offered with the Production Studio (whatever the CS3
version is called, and I do not know if their Soundbooth will do the audio
part, for a pro musician), and might be gone soon. Still Premiere will do what
you ask, but it's not a cheap program. I do not know what might work in the
freeware/shareware arena, but maybe others have the expertise.
Also, I thought that Studio 10+ allowed one to un-link the audio/video. I only
had it for a bit, so I am probably totally wrong.
BTW, if you have Pinnacle, any Hollywood FX (if you have any need to use them)
will transfer to Premiere with just a littl file re-naming.
Good luck,

Could you elaborate on that a bit, what files, what name to give them, etc?
I used to use Studio 8 and still have the install disks and could
temporarily reinstall to get the Hollywood FX items back on my HD.
