- New Product: Tobin Video Transfer TVT-8
- Posted by Clive Tobin on December 24th, 2004
We are happy to announce the long-awaited introduction of the TVT-8
series of 8mm movie film to video
scanning machines.
These are intended for commercial high-volume users, for the efficient
and high quality copying of old
home movies.
No computer is needed for correcting a slow inefficient travel rate, as
the film passes through at very close
to the original 16 and 18 FPS rates of camera exposure. This also
eliminates consumer complaints received
from speeding up the film to an unnatural 20 or 24 speed as with older
equipment. The output plugs directly
into your choice of DVD, Mini-DV or VHS recorder and a monitor.
The typically bad original exposure is largely corrected automatically
by a rapid acting automatic control
that responds to the peak video level, which is quicker and more
positive than an auto iris lens. Video gain
is fixed and the exposure correction does not rely on video AGC, for a
constant signal to noise ratio. Fully
manual control is also available.
Video outputs are professional BNC (with RCA adapter) as well as
S-video.
Image resolution is excellent with a 480-line color camera module, and
special 1:1 optics with no field lens,
rotating prism, groundglass, screen, shutter or mirror in the image
path to degrade picture integrity. Video
output is 100% flicker-free at all speeds owing to our exclusive
technology. Construction is heavy duty,
with a powder-coat welded steel case, three motor design to eliminate
clutches and slipping belts, and no
light bulbs to burn out. Threading is automatic and maintenance is
minimal. The power rewind operates
without running the mechanism.
The TVT-8 models are the first, we think, to include a digital footage
counter for no-haggle billing, and a
digital hour meter to keep track of mechanism hours.
The first run of units is of model TVT-S8 for super-8 film and NTSC
(USA) video output. Regular-8 film
acceptance will be offered soon in the TVT-R8 model. Versions for PAL
(European) video will be available
soon.
The catalog page can be seen on the Tobin Cinema Systems web site, at
http://
www.tobincinemasystems.com/page22.html . The instruction manual can
also be previewed from a link on
that page.
Current production rate is about one unit per week. Since an order
backlog could develop rapidly we
suggest not waiting too long to place your order. Thanks for reading
this announcement.

Clive's electronic and mechanical ingenuity with filmmaking equipment
has made him one of the patron saints and invaluable resources of indie film
makers. People like him are so rare, and vanishing , that they represent an
unreplenishable resource.
Clive, you have my appreciation for your work and your products, and I
hope you are with us for many more years.
Merry Christmas,
Bob Morein

Guys, thanks for your support and kind words.
I won't be retiring for another 6 years yet maybe. I hope I can train
my oldest daughter in optics, electronics and mechanics by then...
Merry Christmas,

He should just take you on your word (if your word is good enough) maybe
then you'll be busy paying him instead of being a silly smart arse.
