No sound in Premiere Timeline
Posted by Fred on October 20th, 2004

This seems to be a MAJOR bug that no one has the answer for and this
problem has been ongoing for over a year now in version
6.0,6.5,1.0,1.5. Google search everywhere and within Adobe's WWW site
but no one has an answer.

Problem:

Import a large AVI to Premiere. Monitor window plays just fine. Move
anything to the TIMELINE and only the video plays, no sound. Yes,
yes, yes, everyone knows to make sure the AUDIO/VIDEO icon is selected
so both are being moved. Yes, yes, yes, the video camera is
unplugged.

I hate the Adobe WWW user site http://www.adobeforums.com because
their search engine sucks harder than it blows. Can never find
anything useful.

Only trick I can make this work is to use PREMIERE for the video edit
then use VIRTUAL DUB to take the AVI and rip the sound into a WAV
file. Then use PREMIERE to import the WAV and combine them. Pretty
piss poor way of doing things for a $1,000 program.

BTW, has the newsgroup
adobe.premiere.windows
been dropped? Maybe it is just my ISP that doesn't carry it.

I had this problem when I upgraded my video card from a ATI AIW 128 Pro to a
9600 Pro. I capture analog audio/video from a satellite using the Huffyuv
codec and ATI's s/w. Sound was fine in the monitor but no sound at all in
the timeline. Exceedingly frustrating and I never did resolve the problem,
nor did Adobe. Rather than capture with the ATI s/w, I now capture with
Virtual dub and then import into Premier. Wish I could help you but it
sounds like you're working with the DV format, which I have no experience
with.

Here is the (obvious) answer: **YOU** have a configuration problem uniquie to
**YOUR** machine; there is no bug. (I've used Premiere on PCs since version
4.0 with excellent results as have several million other people.) Guessing
you're on a PC...but it is typical of other platform users to not mention that
fact.

The most likely configuration problem is that you have configured Premiere (or
whatever you use as a capture program) to capture an audio format for which you
do not have a full, functional codec installed.

Have you examined some of your files with G-Spot or VirtualDub (PC user)? What
audio codec is listed? Is it a codec you know to be fully compatible with
Premiere? If not, why are you using that codec? How about codec configuration?
DV editing can be done with 48 kHz, 16bit, Stereo, only. If you capture with
"CD" specs (41 kHz), that is not a valid sound track for a "DV Editing" preset.

[...massive complex configuration discussion snipped...]

I'm late to the discussion, but I hope it helps anyway.

Another obvious thing to check: Have you enabled the audio track
on the timeline (is the "eye" icon on?)?

The other possibilities are really remote but...
o Red rubber band line dragged to the bottom.
o Audio mixer enabled and faders down.

Good luck.

Have you changed the Playback Settings to "Play Audio on Audio
hardware" so that it uses your computer soundcard? The default seems
to be set for your DV (camera) hardware.
