automatic gain control that turns the recording level up when the sound
level drops. This will make quiet sounds between loud ones louder than
they would be otherwise.

What are you using? There may be a way to control the recording levels
manually. If it's a domestic camcorder, minidisc or MP3 recorder you're
possibly out of luck, with pro or semi-pro gear, you'll definitely be
able to do it

I do not know which model miniDV camcorder was used. Someone else
posted this video in question on YouTube. Made the airplane noise
come across much loader and disturbing than what is experienced in
person. I figure it is the video recorders microphone picking up
every sound, and exagerating it especially if the camcorder is
pointed upwards toward the plane.

I am also aware that when creating a video file, the audio can be
enhanced to make the final output MUCH louder.

Thanks all, for the replies.

when you listen in real life, you listen in stereo, on Youtube, 90% plus
of the sound is mono, so you can't use the cues you normally get from
sound source direction to ignore certain sounds in preference to others.

audio quality anyway.
