- Output Transparency from After Effects
- Posted by David McCall on October 13th, 2007
I'm working on an HD piece where I am creating moves
on product shots using a PC running After Effects and
passing them to an editor using Final Cut. It was working
well until he decided that it would be better if I sent him
the clips with a transparency so that he could put the
background in.
After looking over many of the available output choices,
the only one I've found so far is PNG Quicktime.
My question is; is there a better choice that I missed.
Thanks
David

David, I don't use AE but I've read other users who have recommended
outputting the file as an image sequence (such as PNG) with an alpha
channel.
Vegas can deal with this type of file sequence so I assume FCP can as well.

I do that a lot especially when rendering from lightwave.
In this case it would wind up being over 20,000 HD stills.
That is a lot of drive space, and a lot of rendering for the Mac,
but anything I could do would need rendering. I think the
rendering would be slower with stills. Does that sound right?

Doing most anything with stills will take longer because you're
dealing with 20,000 (or whatever) individual files instead of just a
single (video) file. Just the operating system overhead involved in
opening and closing 20,000 files is significant in and of itself,
compared to opening and closing just one file.
As to the file type to use in your current situation, if it's an
available option, you might want to try Targa (.tga). It was designed
specifically to support an alpha channel.

I think I saw TGA as one of the Quicktime options.
I just tried the PNG Quicktime and it does work but
Final Cut wasn't very happy.

I'm sure that you're both correct about the time it would take so forget
about a stills sequence render.
See if there's a Photo JPEG option in AE.
As I recall, I've sent files to an FCP user using that as an MOV render
option from Vegas.
