Pana DVD-RAM drive in external firewire enclosure - Read ONLY :(
Posted by drifter@inorbit.com on December 26th, 2003

I am unable to write DVD-RAM disc when LF-521 is enclosed in
a external enclosure (I tried two enclosures - Buslink, Sony).
I can read them just fine. No problem writing to CD-R, DVD-R/RW.

Any ideas?

Please find the DVD-RAM driver that applies to your operating system
on the Web page at the following link:

http://panasonic.co.jp/mke/support/d...oem/index.html

Your LF-D521 (retail version) is identical to the SW-9571 (OEM
version).

So the device driver for the SW-9571 should work for your drive.

Hope this helps,

How do you explain the drive working perfectly when connected
to internal IDE channel on the same machine.

I can't explain it.

I have the OEM version of the LF-D521 - the SW-9571 - in an external
enclosure as shown in the following photo:

I didn't assemble the external enclosure, however.

I purchased the drive pre-installed in the enclosure.

It works great - so I know it can be done.

Perhaps it's a matter of finding a brand of enclosure that will work.

I'm not sure what may have been the problem with the two enclosure
brands that you tried.

I so far tried the drive on Sony USB (CRX100), Sony Firewire(CRX1650)
and
Buslink firewire extenal drives. None of them supports writing to
DVD-RAM (disc appears in My Computer as regular DVD-ROM)

The external enclosure that I use feature both USB 2.0 and FIREWIRE connections.

I have only used the FIREWIRE connection.

It works great.

There are both internal and external enclosure models that will write
to DVD-RAM:

1. Panasonic SW-9571 (internal older model; accepts cartridged DVD-RAM
discs)

2. Panasonic SW-9572 (internal newer model; accepts cartridged DVD-RAM
discs)

3. Panasonic SW-9572 (external newer model; accepts cartridged DVD-RAM

4. Panasonic SW-9582 (internal newer model; but doesn't accept
