pinnacle 8 hangs after 2 minutes 30-some-odd seconds
Posted by Ronald O. Christian on October 18th, 2004

Windows XP Pro, NTFS file system, 2000+ AMD processor, a half gig of
ram, lots of swap, Sony TRV 350 captured via USB (2.0), no dropped
frames.

About 23 minutes into the project, (very nearly at the end, durnit)
the capture process suddenly froze. I attempted to stop capture, and
after three or four minutes Studio 8 came unstuck. I could view the
video up to the point where it froze, and only the audio continues
afterwards.

So I restarted it where it left off, and got another 2 minutes 30 odd
seconds, and it froze again.

Mind you, I'm capturing onto NTFS file system with plenty of disk
space left.

Thereafter, I could very consistently do 2 minutes 30 seconds of video
before it would freeze again. Fortunately, I only had about six
minutes left so I did it in three captures and finished the project.
Annoying, but not lethal.

But it's got me wondering -- what happened? What resource did I run
out of? Has anyone else seen this?

Tomorrow I'll boot up fresh and start the next project, see if this
recurs.

According to the Pinnacle Data Rate Test, the "Max safe" is 31836
Kbytes/sec. Call it 30 megabytes/second. I'm using the "best"
preset, which I believe is a little over 3 megabytes/second. Why?

Because a 5400 rev drive cause all kinds of problems that a 7200 will
cure.

Really? I've been capturing and editing DV on a 500 mHz PIII notebook with a
single 4200 rpm drive for several years now. (TRV900, Premiere 6). Early-on,
had problems that were due to my impatience. Since then: No problems whatever.
