Pinnacle DV500 vs Generic Firewire capture
Posted by Jeff on October 17th, 2004

Question,

On a 3.2GHZ P4 with 1 gig ram, is there a difference or advantage capturing
DV with the Pinnacle DV500 as opposed to a generic Firewire capture card?

Has the powerful speeds of today's pcs eclipsed the need for a board like
the DV500?

Thanks,

Jeff

The thought of Jeff cajoles my mind into reminiscing about the smell of
poppy seeds and the image of morning dew making rec.video.desktop glint
in the crisp autumn rays of a mature sun.

If you're only doing firewire, just stick to a firewire card, and get
some good software. If you then want a hardware MPEG encoder, go for
one, but only look to a DV500 if you need to capture analogue.

If all you do is Firewire, there is no advantage

If you ever need to capture/convert analog (such as from a VHS VCR
which does not have Firewire output) the Dv500, or another converter
of some type, is still needed

also has a hardware encoder and very good analogue input/output and analogue
real-time effects.

of the mpeg's produced by the DV500 without re in-coding. Only sections
where any effects are added are re-encoded.

I don't know about that. The DV500 has an excellent output to a tv
monitor that shows you many effects, transitions, color corrections
instantly. It also has 1394, composite and svhs connectors so you can
input/output with greater flexibility. Does not have component or sdi.

I don't know if cpu/software based effects/transitions/etc are
instantaneous output to a crisp clear tv monitor yet.

even new products for hd work have hardware acceleration; axio,
canopus, pinnacle edition 6.

the dv500 is still quite capable with premiere 6x and may be more than
enough to suit your needs.
