- Pinnacle Studio 7, Studio 8 or something else?
- Posted by Rats on August 22nd, 2003
Hi all,
I have tried Pinnacle Studio 7 on a friend's computer and it's quite a nice
package. However, on reading through this NG it appears that many aren't
completely impressed with Pinnacle Studio 7. There are a lot of reports of
crashes and the likes.
Are these bugs fixed in Studio 8? I've never used Studio 8 and am
considering getting it but I don't want to buy an expensive piece of junk.
What other video editing tools can one recommend? I was particularly
impressed by the ease of use of Pinnacle and the features it had, hence I am
inclined towards it. However all the reports on crashing is scaring me a
little.
Cheers

For what it is worth, I have ver 7 and now using 8. It gave me nothing but
fits and apparently you have been learning this from others also.
I had it installed on a new machine with Home XP. This machine was no
"entry level" pc. It had ram and speed. I removed it from that machine and
installed it on an old machine that I bought and upgraded to about one-half
of my new machine, but I did not have many other programs installed on it,
maybe 5 or 6.
So far the software has worked without fault on the lesser machine running
XP Home also! Why, I'll never know.
The software is very easy to use and pretty fancy, but it can also give you
headaches! Not many people want or can do what I did, using a seperate pc,
but it works for me.

Studio 8 is pretty buggy. Still, it is very easy to use.
I capture with a different program (AVI_IO) and then only use
Studio 8 to edit the scenes and generate the final MPG, AVI or
WMV file. For that level of work, it seems to do a good job with
little problems.

Yeah, I think Studio 8 is very easy to use. But it just doesn't work
right. They're up to version 8.8.17 now, and I still don't consider
the quality high enough to have ever been released to the public in the
first place.

I would agree. I have never gotten Studio 8 to work right, or even burned a
dvd with it. I am the one who was "burned" buying it.
I installed the latest update, and during one of it's crashes it destroyed
my system. Fortunately I have backups with Ghost 2003. I had to restore my
hard drive twice with Studio 8 before giving up on it.
I tried many trial versions. Just stuff I can afford, under $100. I can't
afford Vegas. Everything under $100 has MAJOR problems. They stink.
I can capture video with the software supplied with my video card. I can
burn with the software that came with the burner. So I could at least burn
my home videos.
I bought intervideos Windvd creator gold, a download.
It has major problems. Support says they will not help because they don't
support WIN98SE (although their website says they do). But I CAN create a
DVD (a hassle, but works) with this. With menus, titles, editing, and i can
use it for my PCTV (Pinnacle) and Sony DRU500a burner ok.
Video editing software is sure a mess.

I am running 8.8.14 although the program says the version is 8.8.4 so I'm
confused. I am not having many problems with it. It is far more stable
than any of the others that I have tried. However, mine, too has the screen
in the top left and I can't grab the top to reposition it. I have
discovered that if I right click on the icon on the task bar and select
'Restore', it will reposition in the correct place.
Yesterday, I captured and edited a 21 minute video from my Canon MV600i.
The video was recorded back to a DV tape in the camera and from there I
produced two VHS tapes for friends. I also burned a VCD all with Studio and
it was a breeze!
I am not going to upgrade to 8.8.17 because of the reports of sound sync
problems.
Are there any other satisfied customers out there?

Don't know what all the fuss is about...I'm using Studio 8.6.32.0 with Win
XP Pro with 1 gig of ram ... it captures, edits and burns perfectly every
time and I'm a complete beginner!!..me thinks it is your hardware if you
have problems.

Thanks for the tip on using the task bar icon (mine doesn't have one,
however--maybe it was an option during install?). In any case there
have been enough reports of this same problem of having the screen
permanently stuck in the upper-left corner that it's a bonafide bug.
They'll get it ironed out in a couple months or so, hopefully.

It may be an option at install but I just created a shortcut on the desktop
and then dragged that to the task bar. I have all my regular progs on it so
that the desktop is not so cluttered.

Why not just go by the stated system requirements on the package?
