Pinnacle Studio 8 - Import vob/mpeg --> no audio --> why?
Posted by tim koster on October 6th, 2003

hi,

i would like to import a vob vile from a dvd to pinnacle studio 8. for
this reason i copy the vob file to harddisk and rename it to .mpeg.
then i am able to import it to pinnacle. the quality of the video is
great, but the sound is missing. as far as i know, the sound is
compressd in ac3 format (if something like this exists). who can help?

is there a workaround? can i change the ac3 into wave and leave the
mpeg-videostream unchanged?

any tools suggested?

Why not import the sound with a mike, then move it around on your
timeline till it's in the right place.

thanks for the tipp, but tmpgenc does not accept wav files it says
mpeg2 does not not support linear audio streams...

any other suggestions?

the main problem is the following. i have a wedding video on dvd. i
would like to cut it the way i like it in pinnacle studio 8 and burn
it then on dvd again. there should be no loss of quality.

studio 8 has no possibility to import vob-files. so i rename them to
mpeg2. then studio 8 recognizes the video strem, but unfortunately not
the audio stream. as i use the scene recognition, it makes no sense
for me, if i lod the wav-file seperately into studio 8.

what i need is a file, which can be edited (sound and video) by studio
8.

this should be a common problem for everyone who wants to integrate
video sequences from a dvd into his own video project, but
unfortunately there is not much information about this topic in the
internet. i am searching about 11 hours to solve this problem, but i
did not find a solution yet...

i think what i am searching for is a ripper with the functionality of
ripping vop files to mpeg streams and converting only the audio stream
to wav, while leaving the mpeg file unchanged.

this is how i do it now:
1. copy all the vob files to harddisk and renamed them to mpg
2. load them with flaskmpeg and convert them to avi with the option to
change audio to 48 khz (otherwise the sound is not in sync) and
compress the video with the pegasus picvideo mjpeg filter (quality
16).
3. the new avi files have a size of 1 GB (the old vob's were 600 MB),
so i have nearly no loss of quality. the new avi files witt 48 khz
uncompressed audio can be easily loaded to studio 8.

but a solution, where i do not have to recompress the video again,
would be better.

btw: flaksmpeg can read vob files direktly from dvd. but when i gave
flask vob-file number 3 for example it always wanted to rip all the
files into one huge avi. that is the reason for step 1.

DVD2AVI.

Correct. Ofcourse with the good mpeg2 settings.

Correct. A VOB is not exactly the same as a mpeg2. Try DVD2AVI to
extract the audio stream to wav and use the *.d2v from DVD2AVI as
frameserver for TMPGenc.

I have a topic about this on my site. But it is in Dutch.

It's a waste to convert to AVI. Since VOB is mpeg2. You have to find a
way to de-mux the VOB. Try some other settings in TMPGenc. And read my
other reply.
Audio on DVD is always 48kHz.
