- Premiere Pro: Jerky playback
- Posted by stankley on February 21st, 2004
I just installed Prem Pro and am very disappointed with the video
playback in the monitor window - it's very jerky. In 6.5, if you're
previewing a raw DV file, it plays back flawlessly. Not so with Prem
Pro - why should it be any different?
My machine is not super-fast (only 1.5Ghz P4) but as the minumum
requirement is 800MHz, I was not expecting inteferior performance.
Anyone have a solution to this major annoyance?

Do you have your camcorder/VCR (firewire) connected?
With my 6.5 the monitor window on the computer updates
only 1 FPS when it is outputing DV (via the firewire). If
you turn off or disconnect the Firewire, the monitor window
runs at real-time (30FPS).

Try rendering the timeline first, then use the export function to view it
externally. I get the same effect during editing, its a bit annoying but the
finished product is good.

I think the below response is correct. I would bet you have the camcorder
connected to the firewire port and Premiere is devoting all it's resources to
outputting to firewire, which makes the computer screen output very jerky. Turn
off the camcorder.

I do not know about 6.5 or Pro, but this is a common problem
(feature?) in Premiere 6.0/6.1, and can be resolved by adding
the following lines to the end of the Prem60.ini file:

[DXMedia]
FastPreviewWhileTransmitting=1
--- 8< ---
See <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/29b56.htm> for more

On the other hand, if the playback is smooth when viewed through
the camcorder, it makes more sense to monitor everything using
an external video monitor (or a portable tv) connected to the
camcorder's video output terminals than on the computer screen.
(That is the better option of the two, anyway.)
If the playback is not smooth even when viewed through the
camcorder, then there is something really wrong.

No camcorder connected, guys. I have both 6.5 and Pro installed so
tested just playing a single DV AVI in the preview window: plays
perfectly in 6.5 but probably 10 frames/s in Pro. I tempted to
abandon Pro and go back to 6.5...

Just updated the video driver to latest NVidia one (for GeForce2 MX)
and it's much better - still not quite framerate, but it's very close
and certainly acceptable. It's a little disappointing that Pro
imposes higher video requirements than 6.5, but that's progress for
you!!

I had symptoms similiar to yours. It was fixed by changing a registry
entry according to the following
