Problem burning movie to VCD
Posted by Jasper on August 19th, 2003

I am trying to burn a 98min movie to a single vcd but I'm having
problems. I have encoded the movie using TMPGenc with a reduced
bitrate to fit on an 80 min cd, as detailed at
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/84759.php which has created a
file of about 799MB but when I try to burn it using Nero it says that
there isn't enouh room on the disc. I've unticked 'create standard
compliant cd' as I understand that Nero tries to re-encode the movie
with that ticked.

My cd says 80min/700MB on the box so I can understand why 799MB is too
much, but TMPGenc produces a file of nearly 800MB when selecting 'CDR
- 80min' from the drop down box.

What am I missing here?

Thanks for the suggestion. I even tried turning the overburn up to
120mins but it still spits the cd out saying 'there is not enough
space to burn this compilation...'

I'm sure I'm doing something stupid here but I just can't work it out.

Perhaps you could try creating a disc image, rather than burning to a real
CD and see just how large the resulting image is. There are other overheads
on a VCD aside from the MPEG stream itself, though Nero should not really
worry about this with the overburn setting switched on. It may be that you
will need to re-encode the file if it simply won't fit on the disc. Try the
above test with a disc image and see what happens.

Thanks for sticking with me on this one Michael. I think you might be
on to something here. The mpg file is 776MB at the moment but the
image.nrg is 888MB!! I am choosing 'vcd' from the list of formats on
the left when creating a new file and 'create compliant cd' is
unticked in the burn properties. I have also unticked 'create cd-i
application' (I don't even know what that is anyway) The write method
is disk at once. Any ideas?

I have to admit that I don't use Nero for authoring. Have you tried any
other authoring software? It's unclear why Nero would create such a large
disc image - VCD overheads aren't THAT large, unless you have extensive
animated menus or other items taking up space. Why not locate the last
freeware version of VCDEasy and see whether that works any better? That's
what I usually use for VCD/SVCD and I've used MPEG files as large as 820MB
in the past with overburn enabled. Try an alternative authoring tool and see
what happens.
