- Problem with Vegas Video?
- Posted by Brian on March 3rd, 2004
When using a external monitor for Vegas Video editing I need to
connect to a VCR then connect the monitor to the VCR else I am unable
to get a picture on the external monitor.
Also if I render the video to DV tape I am able to watch the finished
movie on an external monitor but only if the I send the signal into a
VCR then connect the monitor to the VCR, else I get the picture
flashing on and off on the external monitor.
My setup is a firewire card connected to a digital to analog converter
which sends the analog video to the VCR then to the external monitor.
I tried Pinnacle Video Studio 8 and don't have this problem as then
rendering the video to DV tape I can connect an external monitor to
the analog out put of the digital to analog converter (with out having
to connect the VCR) and view the results on the monitor.
Is there anything I can try to get the external monitor to work with
Vegas Video. It seems strange that Pinnacle Video Studio works ok but
Vegas Video won't work.
Also I noticed that video captured from video tape record darker in
Vegas Video than in Pinnacle Video studio.

Unfortunately that's the way Vegas works. Until Sony decides to change it,
we're stuck with it. At work, we ended up buying a Canopus ADVC-100 to work
around this issue.
Is setup on or off? If it's off, blacks are set to '0' IRE and this would
make the capture appear darker. OTOH, it could be that Vegas is showing you
the real image quality. Check your scopes and see what they say. HTH.

Thanks for your reply Mike
I forgot to add it to my post but I'm using the ADVC-100 as the
digital to analog converter. Looks like it must work some some TV
monitors and not for others.
What is and where can I find this setup that you refer to?
Are you talking about scopes as a feature in Vegas Video? I'm new to
Scopes and how they work.

Sorry. I was thinking of another NLE system I use that has this feature,
not Vegas. However, if you select the "Broadcast Colors" plug-in (part of
the "Video Output FX" option found just above the preview monitor display),
you have the choice of selecting either/both the 7.5 IRE setup or the Studio
RGB options. The only explanation I could find for this feature is, after
choosing it, click the question mark in the window that pops up. I highly
recommend buying Douglas Spotted Eagle's book "Vegas Editing Workshop " as
it gives a much better explanation of the use of scopes.
Although the manual covers it somewhat (pp. 227 - 230), DSE's book is a much
better resource. HTH.

just a quick suggestion but have you got the advc set to the right forat
NTSC or PAL? as this could be the issue
- Posted by Brian on March 4th, 2004
Thanks Paul,
but it is set to PAL (my country is PAL).
I have managed to convert a video signal from analog to digital but
there is a problem when going from digital to analog.

I use Vegas and connect from my firewire to a digital to analogue converter,
(a sony camcorder) and strait to my TV. It works perfect.

Thanks Sanman,
I'm beginning to think that the
problem is with the TV (a Panasonic 14 inch TV).

Don't worry. You'll never regret purchasing Vegas, especially if you just
bought it.
According to

"Purchase Vegas 4.0 or Vegas + DVD between March 1, 2004 and April 30, 2004
and receive a $50 rebate by mail!
In addition, any users who purchased version 4.0 of Vegas or Vegas + DVD
software between March 1, 2004 and April 30, 2004 will be entitled to a free

Do you qualify??
It's an excellent piece of very reliable software. You'll have a lot of fun
learning all that it's capable of. Great user base too.
I've never used DVD X Show so I can't comment on it.
I got the link from a posting Richard Crowley made on the thread "Production
Options for Yearbook Video". Maybe he has a comment on it. Richard??
"...encoding determines the quality. True?"
Yes and no. A good encoder will make a difference. For example, the
Microsoft encoder is known for it's low quality. OTOH, the MainConcept
encoder is known for excellent quality. Understanding all the variables
involved is another issue as well. Lots of reading ahead of you.
http://www.adamwilt.com/pix-codecs.html is a good place to start. BTW, his
site is a treasure trove of excellent information. Stick around here for a
while and you'll learn a lot from various posters.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
