If you don't mind an unpredictable filesize, you're better off with
'1 pass quantizer'. I haven't really tried it myself, but there's an
awful lot of information about XviD and DivX in Doom9's Forum.

I don't really care about specific file sizes. As long as I get
smaller files than my live recordings (~6Mbit/sec as things are now),
I'll be happy. (as long as they still look nice)

Thanks for the tip.

There are guides on doom9.org which explain how to use Gordian Knot, a
front-end that's simple enough for just about anyone to use. It's easy
enough to download all the software and just try it out to see if it meets
your needs.

I've been using it to encode some shows that I've ripped off the hard
drive of my PVR. You may find that it doesn't offer the advanced
processing options that you want to use. I believe it does give you a
last chance to hand-edit the AviSynth script it uses before encoding begins
though, so this may be the way to get your additional filtering if you
find its built-in options lacking.
