On PC's we have a function similar to that built into our "wheel mice".

No. Not really. For one thing, wheel mice are available for the Mac and
generally work very well for those that want them. For another, the
PowerMate (which is dual-platform) is much more AV-editor-friendly than
the mouse wheel is and offers more functionality. While Griffin is
primarily a Macish company, most of the (admittedly few) people I know
who have a PowerMate are Windows users.
