Re: Problems with DV capture and missing frames of audio

Yeah ... we deal with it regularly. It isn't your computer, it's your
camera.

Chances are you have an XL-1 or other Canon camcorder. Doesn't happen with
any of our Sony cams but it's a nuisance with our XL-1. AFAIK it also won't
happen with any cam that outputs locked audio eg. DSR-250 and above.

The Canon XL-1 audio sample circuitry particularly, doesn't run at precisely
48KHz/sec (neither do the Sonys, but they are *very* much closer to the
mark, so no hassle). The problem occurs because there are insufficient
audio samples (or possibly too many) to exactly match what the capture card
is expecting. The result is a frame that has an "error" in it, hence it is
suppressed. A google search should produce a bit more information for you.

We deal with it about once every gigabyte when downloading (only effects our
XL-1). Best way to solve it is to take the immediately preceding frame and
copy it into the vacant space. It ain't perfect, but it's a heck of a lot
better than the objectionable instantaneous dropout of audio.

Hughy.
