Trust me...I own both, Edition and Vegas, (along with Canopus Edius, Storm
Edit, Premiere, Pinnacle Studio and Pinnacle DV500 plus). IMHO, Vegas is
the hands down winner for ease of use, logical layouts, easy to apply
transitions and filters, quick preview (instant in fact), and fantastic
audio control. Picture in Picture? No problem. Fade in-fade out? No
problem. Make the picture in picture move? No problem. Make the picture in
picture fade in, move around, zoom in-out, exit the screen? No problem. The
rest of them? Problem. BTW, Studio also gets a vote for easy to use
interface, but does not have the composting power or track management like
Vegas. You'll never regret buying or using Vegas. It is rock solid.

rgo,
Did you use Edition5 or 4.5?? Apparently there are significant
differences?? And yup, I'd like to be able to do the fun effects you
describe -- can't do in Studio8. Not to mention authoring
difficulties... AAArrrrrgggggggghhh....

For the record I wrote the review on Videoguys for Edition 5 and I do
love it. But Vegas is a top notch program that can hold it's own with
anything available.
I am working on a new NLE round up to compare all the new choices, but
these article take a lot of time and effort and have to be re-written
/ modified constantly because of new products in the industry. I just
sat down with Premiere Pro at DV Expo this week and they've come a
long way !!
Here's a quickie comparison of the things I like best between Vegas &
Edition
Both have excellent tools for the actual editing. Cutting & triming
are top notch and the media mangement is very good.
Edition gets an edge for 3D FX. I love them, some folks hate them. If
you like adding animated page peels, bouncing spheres and other FX -
Editon gets a big edge. Hollywood FX in real-time is something that I
love and use - all the time.
Vegas has the best speed and motion controls around. Super easy to use
and superb for when you want to use multiple settings over the course
of the clip. I'm not talking just keyframing here, but the way Vegas
lets you handle it. Allow me to explain. Take a baseball swing. (I
did). I had it start in regular motion, then I went to really slow
motion during the swing, then I had it rev up to double speed after
impact. This was extremely easy to do with Vegas and it looked GREAT!
Try doing it with any other NLE and it is much more time consuming.
Vegas is AWESOME for photo montages. You can pan & zoom over the still
images and then have cool transitions and pictures flying on and off
the screen. Sure you can do this with other NLEs, but not as easily or
with as great a look.
Edition has integrated DVD authoring that is better then the +DVD
integration with Vegas. Edition lets yo add motion menus and buttons
using clips from your project with ease. Vegas has AC3 encoding and
5.1 surround. I wish I had all of these key DVD features in both. I
think I will in the not so distant future.
Color correction. Vegas has better color correction tools. But the
color correction on Edition is very easy to use and a mouse click
away. With the Edition Pro hardware I can watch my color correcting on
a TV monitor while I am doing it. I can do this with Vegas, but I need
a converter or my camcorder hooked up to the firewrie output.
Real-Time and rendering. funny that I put these two together - huh?
well i did so for a good reason. Vegas has a ton of real-time power
including preview output to firewire. But this is preview quality -
not full resolution and frame rates. The final output has to be
rendered and Vegas isn't that fast.
Edition uses the CPU & GPU to deliver multiple layers of real-time
video previews with very complex filters and transitions applied. With
Edition Pro I get real-time TV output while I edit. Even more
important Edition renders the video for DV output while I am editing.
It's called background rendering and it is a very cool technology. And
Edition gets the edge here - for now. As machines get faster and
faster I expect Vegas to become real-time firewire output at full
resolution.
Learning curve. Both these apps are different from Premeire. New users
who never editied with premiere will actually have a much easier time
of learning wither one. Editions interface looks very strange at
first, but the more you use it, the more intuitive it becomes. If you
ever used an audio editing program, then you will take to Vegas very
quickly. The interface is easy to use and intuitive for many - but I
have had some guys argue this point with me. The good news is that
some excellent training resources are now available for Vegas.
We're now hosting the Vegas Tips & Trticks newsletter
http://www.jetdv.com/tts
Douglas Spotted Eagle has put out a 4 DVD Workshop that is LOADED with
great training. I can't believe how much he can make vegas do. He is a
master and anyone willing to invest in these DVDs will become an
expert Vegas editor as well. We've got the 4 DVD set in stock. Current
price is $99.95. Even cooler you can get vegas 4 with the Workshop for
$349.95 (or Vegas + DVD for $549.95 w/ it). for more info
http://www.videoguys.com/vegasvideo.html
We are working hard to get similar trainng materials for Edition 5.
We've got a nice littel intro to Edition video tape, but it was done
for version 4.5 The interface is the same, so the training is still
useful. We offer it for $29.95 with your Edition purchase.
Lots of good choices for digital videographers these days.

I've been using Edition 4.5. I can't speak to version 5 yet, but the
reviews I've read sound promising. I do like the Hollywood FX that are
available in 4.5 and Studio (and I own the Silver Edition of the FX for the
DV500/Premiere set up. Cool effects when used "sparingly".).
BTW, good message by Gary Bettan up the chain a bit.

Gary,
Thanks so much for all the great info in this comparison. These are
exactly the things I wanted to hear. Lots to digest and think about.
Thanks for taking the time,
