Recommendation USB Tuner Card
Posted by windsurfing_stew@yahoo.com.au on March 5th, 2007

Hi Group,

1) Could someone recommend a good USB TV tuner card. Specifically I
would like -

Analogue and Digital signals
Something that will recieve in both Britian and Australia
Can allow capture from a VCR's output

2) Is it possible to get satelite/cable TV on any of the cards on the
market. Eg here in Australia where I'm living we have about 7 free to
air TV stations but if you subscribe to satelite TV you get about 50
but need special hardware to plug into your TV and a subcription?

Hoping that someone can she some light on these two issues,

Stewart

Check out "OnAir Creator." I recently bought one and may soon
buy another.
I'm in the U.S. but the unit is made in Asia and advertises
support of other standards.
Email responses from the tech(s) at this
division(http://www.autumnwave.com/content/view/24/167/) have
been prompt, well written, and courteous. I have compiled a
small wish-list of tweaks I'd like to see, but none is a
deal-breaker. I'm presently using it to capture
analog/digital-QAM from a direct cable connection. I need to
install an antenna before OTA will reach it.

Digital capture quality is certainly not an issue and it's MPEG2
on-board capture for analog signals is as good as the Hauppauge
units I have used before it. S-Video from the cable-box to the
unit provides a capture method for non-QAM digital programming.
Likewise, this would be my VCR capture port, if I had a VCR.
The unit supports D-VHS, if that's of interest?

It's not a bad looking unit and all the cabling is done on one
edge of the unit. Like most, it has a remote, but I've never
found a use for remote control of a capture device since I use a
wireless keyboard-trackball combo and my digital TV is the PC
monitor.

This device does not control an STB, however. That could be a
deal-breaker, were you to require this capability.
