- Scart -> s-video black & white
- Posted by lordy on October 9th, 2003
Hi all,
Ive got a Digital Set to box (Scart OUT) that I want to connect to
a PC-TV Rave card (S-Video in). The picture is always black and white and
slightly grainy. (Although the level of grininess varies with the TV
Viewing software I use)
The picture is also black & white if I connect
Camcorder(S-Video OUT) to TV(Scart in) but colour to TV(S-Video in).
The Set top box works fine(ie colour) to a SCART input to a real TV.
The PC-TV Card S-Video is fine (ie colour) using my Hi-8 camcorder as
source.
But when ever I try to use this SCART->SVideo lead its black and white.
I first tried a cheap Maplins one for £8. Then I tried a more pricey one
at £20. Same result so I figure the problem is more fundamental...
I've tried all combinations of setting the DigiBox SCART output to both
RGB and CVBS and setting the TV Card input to both S-Video/Composite with
1 field / 2fields interlaced & 2 fields.
(I have also tested NTSC & SECAM etc just in case but this usually made
things worse,)
All settings are on PAL where possible.
I googled a few posts and pages on this there seem to be two main
resolutions (besides PAL/NTSC issues):
1. TV doesnt know about s-video via SCART socket.
2. Some magic cable upgrade fixes everything
I'm guessing Scart can generally do RGB but not S-video? So I may need
something a bit cleverer than a simple SCART-SVideo lead?

I decided to get an Scart-> Composite Video cable.
I wonder what percentage of equipment with scart sockets support S-Video at
the Scart (rather than via an additional S-Video socket). I'm guessing
pretty low..

back to enable s-video over SCART. Many TVs do not support s-video over
scart at all. It's not part of the original scart standard, there are no
pins left to do it, so some of the existing pins have to be swapped
over. The s-video "luminance" (brightness) signal goes in on the
composite video input, which is why you see a black and white picture if
the SCART is not configured for s-video.
