- Should I fix XL1s firewire port of just buy a cheap camcorder for feeding tapes into computer?

Dear Group,
I'm going back and forth on whether or not I should have my
broken XL1s firewire port fixed or just buy a cheaper camcorder for
feeding the tapes into the computer. I know price wise, it would be
much cheaper to buy a cheaper camcorder, but are there other
advantages to getting the firewire port fixed? All suggestions are
welcomed. Thanks.

Alas, you could most likely buy another cheap camcorder
for less than it would cost to get the XL1 fixed.
I can think of several advantages for buying a second, cheap
camcorder....
1) Avoids the expense (likely greater) of fixing the XL1
2) Reduces wear-n-tear on the XL1 for shooting only and
not also for capture
3) Gives you an extra camera for getting "B-roll" shots
which make for much more interesting video programs,
even of birthday parties and wedding anniversaries. :-)
There are probably other arguments I can't think of at the
moment.

Just curious, do you know what zapped your firewire port? I had my
camcorder plugged into my computer the other day and suddenly, the
audio card with built in firewire port, went out. After getting a
new audio card and a separate firewird card, I discovered that the
camcorder firewire port is now dead. After learning it would be a
minimum of $200 to fix, I decide to go the separate camcorder route,
and just use the original for recoding.

Sorry, I'm not sure, I bought it used, and the port was already bad
when I bought it.

I did try this once and did a 2 camera shoot. The cheap camcorder image was
pretty nasty compared to my XL2. I never was able to get them to look close
to the same.

That's when you throw the B-roll footage through a few filters to make
it look "stylized" (i.e., intentional). ;-)
