Sony DVD Architect 4.5a Confusion
Posted by Travis on October 28th, 2007

Greetings Experts,

I'm a newb with a question.

DVD Architect 4.5a is reporting that my file size is too big for my
planned 4.7G DVD. This totally confounds me as my single 56 minute
mpeg2/24p is reported by Explorer as 2.5G and my single wav file is .6G.
Both were compiled to the "preferred" settings of DVD Architect in
Vegas Pro 8.

In DVD Architect\Optimize DVD it acknowledges the Explorer file sizes
yet states that the estimated resultant will be a vid file of 3.3G and
an audio file of 4.1G for 7.6G total. Also DVD Architect states that I
don't need to recompress these files.

I was really under the impression that if the files were compiled to
preferred settings, nothing more was required and it wouldn't be
expanded. Obviously I have a lot to learn.

Why is this and what can you recommend I do or go read? I can't find
anything in the On-line help and pdf's to explain the issue.

Thanks,
Travis

DVD Architect has a LONG history (going back to version 1.0) of
incorrectly reporting file sizes.
Most users (me included) have run into this issue numerous times over
the years.
If you know (and you do) that your file size is under the limit, tell it
to go ahead and do the prepare/burn. Everything will then work as
expected.

I was able to burn one DVD that actually worked in my player. Am
attempting another one now.

I need to understand the menu'ing system better. My chapters worked but
at the end of the last chapter, it failed to return to the main menu.
That's probably in the literature somewhere though.

Thanks again for sharing your expertise Mike.

Travis, I'm glad to hear that it worked.
As far as your last chapter, make sure that it's "End Action" points to
the proper menu.
To check this, make sure the last chapter is visible in the centre
display window - or double-click it in the menu on the left side of the
screen.
Select "End Action" in the menu on the right side of the screen and make
sure "Destination" says either "most recent menu" or "menu 1" or, if you
have a menu title on the main page (i.e. Travis's menu), you may want it
to point to "Travis's menu".
Hope this makes sense.

It made perfect sense. It's corrected now so I get to burn some more
DVD's

On another note, when I changed the rendering of DV to mpeg from 24p to
29.9fps, DVD Architect suddenly started estimating file sizes
correctly. Between the two renditions, the file sizes were very
similar so maybe their "sizer" has trouble with particular formats.

Thanks again for helping me out. I really appreciate it Mike.
