- Stardock Web Forum Test
- Posted by Brad Wardell [Stardock] on April 6th, 2005
Stardock isn't about to give up on standard news groups like these for
providing support and providing a means for users to talk to one another..
However, we are also adding support for a new forum system:
http://forums.stardock.com
This forum technology is something Stardock has developed. It's a
derivative of what we use on WinCustomize.com but it's been optimized for
speed and ease of use.
A few features of it that you may find interesting:
1) New posts in sub-forums will show up in their parents.
Explaination:
Here on the news groups we literally have to go to each and every news group
to see if there are new posts. On the new web forums, the parent forums
contain the content of their children:
Example:
Here we have:
Object Desktop (stardock.od.windows.general)
ObjectBar (stardock.od.windows.objectbar)
DesktopX (stardock.desktopx)
On the Stardock forums we have Object Desktop
(http://forums.stardock.com/Forums.aspx?ForumID=166) and then sub forums
for WindowBlinds, DesktopX, IconPackager, etc. If you just go to the Object
Desktop forum, the newest things from WindowBlinds and DesktopX and so forth
will show up there. This gives you the flexibility of either just going to
the top most forums to see "what's new" or you can go down as deep as you
want (such as Object Desktop -> DesktopX -> Development->Widgets and so
forth).
2) It will keep track of YOUR posts using your Stardock.net ID. So when you
make a post, it will keep track of it. Then, if you come back a week later,
you can see if there are responses to it.
3) It will always display on the left the posts that have recently gotten a
response.
We are still tweaking how it looks and fixing little bugs in it. It's
designed to be faster than the typical web forum, particularly in terms of
listing forum posts (actually reading a post is based mostly on overall
traffic but forum post lists are cached).
Hope you like it.

It will take a little while to get used to even though the regular ones
aren't going away. The main problem I have with newsgroups is having to
subscribe to all those I have interest in, but some I really don't need
all the time.
With the web forum it is easier to see all. I like it.

I'm not so sure, web forums seem to be up and down all the time for me.
Newsgroup was almost always available, and is simple text, simple to make
posts for, and simple to manage (using a program like outlook express)
but if it's the inevitable future...and yes, the web forum does sound
beneficial in the mentioned areas.

I just now completed a post explaining why the newsgroup format, which is
all new to me, isn't meeting my needs as far as privacy goes.
Thanks for building the new system.
Take care!
