STOIK wmv to avi Problem
Posted by Frank on May 29th, 2008

I am looking for a reasonable avi format that works in Quicktime. I
am converting a 14.2 meg wmv file. When I select Avi for PC small or
Cinepak, I get no video. When I select Mjpeg, I get a video but it is
40 time size of the wmv file.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps you could start with a different source file, and see
if your output options and results would change ? Maybe
the converter has issues ?

Another question is, how much trouble will your Quicktime
viewing audience go to, to add components to Quicktime
so that what is inside the AVI container can be
recognized ? Maybe formats that will work within the AVI,
without augmentation, will be too big for distribution
via the web.

(Past this URL back together - it is a search against the
Apple site, and mentions "Perian" as part of the solution.)

An addition for Quicktime. Some people have better luck with 1.0.

Paul,

Thanks for the response.

I am converting to Quicktime as an intermediate step to prepare an
OnCue presentation (www.impatica.com). Everything is on a PC.

I think it is a converter problem; small files work but large
(actually medium) files don't. Two large files have the problem.

It appears the program is re-encoding the video. An uncompressed
format might be just as good as anything, as the program is
going to do its own conversion. At least, that is the impression
I get from a cursory look at the manual.

"This will keep the compression artifacts to a minimum."

Note that some filesystems, like FAT32, have a 4GB maximum file
size. If attempting to handle huge files with your disk set up
that way, expect problems. If the disk is NTFS, then files over
4GB can be handled without special precautions.

I cannot really figure out what Stoik can do, by looking at their
web page, so I don't know what options you're being offered.

I think, once the OnCue program completes its re-encoding,
the output size will be much smaller. I still don't see though,
how Quicktime fits into this.

(1) Get a copy of MPEG Screenclip (freeware).

(2) Try some stuff

I sent a note to STOIK explaining my problem. (no response yet) I
will summarize it here.

For OnCue to work, it is necessary (but not sufficient) to have an avi
video that runs in Quicktime.
I took a 12 min presentation (14,299k in wmv) and converted it to
several avi formats

avi4cimsm 48,949k
Cinepak 62,018k
Mjpeg 673,590k

The third one worked but the first two did not have any video in
Quicktime. The first two also failed in OnCue.
Smaller files worked.

With Mjpeg the avi-to-wmv ratio is 47 to 1. For a one hour video the
size will be 3.4 gigs. This is an intermediate step but will be
cumbersome.

I would like to find a more efficient conversion.
