Hi,
I've got an HD video recorder and I want to be able to stream this
video across the network and display it on my linux box.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what it will take or
where to start researching this.
Any help much appreciated.

OK, so is the "this video" that you want to stream
across the network one of the MPEG2 TS files on
the camcorder's hard drive or are you talking about
using the HDMI connection? Do you have a
Blackmagic "Intensity" capture card?

Basically, streaming involves a server and a client or clients. They
must be compatible and use matching protocols. You could get the
idea with VLC (Video LAN Client) media player. It has some usable,
if limited, server capability. It is also a client, as the name implies.
This could be a start.
You will need to capture the live output of the camcorder's
sensors to "stream live video", this is apparently only available
through the HDMI connection. The Intensity card is the best
HDMI capture card, as far as I have found. Once you have a
DirectShow device capturing the video, you can use the server
functions of VLC to serve the video to any client that can connect
to the server. You can transcode the stream "on-the-fly" with
some server software, VLC included.
